Thursday 31 December 2026 is the big night, and New Year's Day 2027 is Friday 1 January, which means a proper long weekend for anyone who takes Friday off. Ellenborough Park is Cheltenham's only five-star hotel and the grandest NYE option in the area. Their traditional New Year's Eve evening features a Champagne and canapé reception, dinner served by candlelight in the main dining rooms, and then a live band party in the De la Bere room. Just before midnight, guests head outside for a spectacular fireworks display overlooking Cheltenham Racecourse. The setting (500-year-old Great Hall, oak beams, Regency period detail) does a lot of the work, and the whole evening feels like a properly grown-up celebration.

Book a room rather than trying to taxi home. Ellenborough Park offers NYE stay packages combining dinner and accommodation, and given the 20-minute drive back into town, it's worth it.

Leonardo Hotels Cheltenham

A more affordable black-tie gala option. Leonardo Hotels Cheltenham typically hosts a New Year's Eve dinner at around £79 per person, including a glass of sparkling wine on arrival, a four-course meal, and a DJ disco that runs into the early hours. It's the right pick if you want the full gala night out without the five-star price tag. Book early; these tickets sell fast, particularly among groups and office parties.

Cheltenham Chase Hotel

Out at Brockworth, a short drive from Cheltenham, the Cheltenham Chase Hotel runs a well-established NYE gala evening with dining, dancing and the full hotel treatment. It's a reliable big-hotel option and particularly popular with groups who want a full overnight package. Book ahead for bedrooms if you want to stay the night (and you should).

Supper Clubs and Live Music Nights

If a formal gala dinner isn't your style, Cheltenham has a growing crop of supper club and live music NYE events that are considerably more fun for many people.

Wild Thyme and Honey

Wild Thyme and Honey just outside Cheltenham has become one of the best NYE bookings in the area. The full supper club evening includes a four-course dinner, dancing with a DJ, casino tables for the evening, and marshmallow-toasting at the fireplace afterwards, all for around £100 per person. If dinner isn't your thing, they also run a dancing-only ticket from 9:30pm for around £30.

The atmosphere is warm, fun and the kind of place where strangers actually talk to each other, which is a rare thing on a formal NYE. Book very early.

Settebello at Belgrave House

Cheltenham's most charismatic Italian restaurant runs an atmospheric NYE event with Italian flair. Expect cocktails and flowing fizz from 9pm, live music, proper Italian food, and a basement party that takes over after the midnight countdown. It's the right choice if you want somewhere with genuine personality rather than a generic hotel function room.

The Ivy Montpellier Brasserie

The Ivy puts on a full NYE dinner and dancing package every year, with a four-course menu, midnight Champagne and a DJ running late into the night. It's a polished, reliable option for those who want a recognisable name and a consistent standard, and the room itself (velvet, greenery, brass) is built for occasions.

Restaurants for Dinner on New Year's Eve

If you just want a proper NYE dinner without the gala packaging (no gala, no DJ, just a really good meal in a really good room), Cheltenham's best independent restaurants are where to go.

Restaurants in Montpellier tend to do NYE well, with shorter evening menus and a walkable cluster of bars to move between afterwards
Hotel restaurants at No. 131, Malmaison and the Queens Hotel all put on NYE menus, and give you the option of adding an overnight stay
Independent country pubs and restaurants within a short drive (Wild Thyme and Honey, the Lucky Onion group's rural spots) are often quieter and more atmospheric than the town centre on NYE

A tip: avoid the chain restaurants on NYE. They tend to push a rushed set menu at an inflated price and lack the atmosphere that makes the night worth paying for. Cheltenham's strength is its independents, and NYE is exactly the right night to support them.

Pubs and Bars for a Lower-Key Night

Not everyone wants dinner and a formal party. If you just want a good pint, a proper crowd and midnight chimes somewhere relaxed, Cheltenham has plenty of proper independent pubs that fill up without needing a dress code.

The Beehive in The Suffolks is one of the town's best independent pubs, with real ales, two gardens and a crowd that's genuinely local. It's a quieter, warmer NYE than the town centre chains.
The Bayshill on St George's Place does a proper pub night with live music, hearty food and a welcoming atmosphere. A good choice for anyone who doesn't fancy black tie and canapés.
The Rotunda Tavern on Montpellier Street is small, independent, and the right call for a lower-key drinks evening where you can actually hear yourself talk.
The cocktail bars in Montpellier (John Gordon's, Memsahib's Lounge, The Clarence Social) are open late on NYE and take bookings for groups. They're the natural option if you want drinks-led rather than food-led.

Where to Stay in Cheltenham for New Year's Eve

What Should You Do on New Year's Day in Cheltenham?

Two answers, depending on your energy.

If you can face it, go to the racing. New Year's Day Racing at Cheltenham Racecourse is one of the best day-after NYE activities anywhere in the country. A Grade 1 race meeting on 1 January, fresh air, a live band, a Family Fun Zone, food stalls, and a proper atmosphere that's exactly what a hungover brain needs. It's a proper Cheltenham tradition.

If you can't, go for a long brunch somewhere warm. Most of the town's best brunch spots open on 1 January, including WoodKraft, the Montpellier cafés and the independent coffee shops along the Promenade. Book a late 11am or noon table the week before, walk slowly to it, order a Bloody Mary if you're feeling brave, and take your time. Follow with a gentle walk around Pittville Park or up the Promenade to air out the head. The town is at its quietest on 1 January, and it's genuinely one of the nicest days of the year to wander.

How Far in Advance Should You Book New Year's Eve in Cheltenham?

At least six to eight weeks ahead for the best gala dinners, supper clubs and independent restaurants. For Ellenborough Park, Wild Thyme and Honey, and the most popular Montpellier restaurants, aim for October or early November to be safe. Hotel rooms on NYE are the single hardest thing to book in Cheltenham, and the best ones go by mid-autumn.

If you've left it late (and many of us do every year), the fallback options are the smaller independent pubs, the late cocktail bars in Montpellier, and a handful of the newer restaurants that take bookings closer to the night. New Year's Eve in Cheltenham rewards people who commit.
